Opened in May 2017 the Ned, London is a unique hotel, oozing character, style and 1920’s glamour. The brainchild of Nick Jones, the founder of Soho House & Co, he quickly realised the potential of the disused Midland Bank building when he visited it in 2012.Although it had stood empty for nearly 8 years he could see ‘the details and scale of it – that just floored me’ he said. With an introduction from Ron Burkle, Soho House Chairman and investor to Andrew Zobler the CEO of New York’s Sydell Group a partnership was forged. They both recognised the architecture of the building and wanted to make Sir Edwin ‘Ned, Lytyens’ 1924 masterpiece grand once again.
Today the heritage building offers 252 bedrooms, 9 restaurants, men’s and women’s grooming services and a members’ club. It is difficult to choose between the different dining experiences whether it be Italian at Cecconi’s, the Lutyens Grill, Kaia’s Asian Pacific, or Zobler’s Deli and Diner to name but a few! Each restaurant has its own distinct space within the vast banking hall, seperated by 92 verdite columns and rows of Grade 1 listed walnut banking counters.
The period features continue as you explore the meeting spaces, each blessed with plenty of natural daylight with lots of domed windows and walls surrounding with walnut panelling and lit by vintage chandeliers. The rooms can accommodate between 4 – 200 guests and catering can range from a four course meal to snacks and cocktails.
One of the highlights though as a guest staying at the hotel has to be access to Ned’s Club Gym and Spa and should you upgrade to a large, Grand Heritage room or suite you gain access to Ned’s Club upstairs. This has a heated pool overlooking the London skyline with views across to St Paul’s Cathedral and two converted domes with outdoor terraces for dining and drinking.
It is not surprising that The Ned has just been awarded the Catey’s award for Best Hotel of the Year in the Hotel group category. An exceptional place both to work or relax.
